Fade

haha okay the title was intentional, but my love for lame chick flicks are fading. There are way to many adaptions of novels made into movies. New ones coming up from non-literature. The point is.... I think I am finally sick of chick flicks/movies. Well for some I have to make an exception because no doubt I would want to watch it. But I am reminding myself that I cannot possibly watch all. (I wanted to watch every.single.romcom no joke)

I just hate the endings of it. Its probably like a hangover except its felt on the inside. What is worse is that when you flip to the last page, you have to face reality again. And it keeps getting worse - like how all the chick flicks paint bad/mysterious guys as flawless. The hero/prince charming/boyfriend in the novels will always be perfect. Always. No matter what crooked, shady past he's been through it will always change when he meets her. And it keeps going downhill when you dream you can actually have that kind of perfect (totally fake) relationship in real life. I mean... life is the real deal.

Whoever thought of deluding girls with impossible hopes of finding love, popularity or whatever. They thought wrong. It shouldn't be so delusional. Yes we want to escape reality sometimes, but throwing impossibly perfect stories in our faces. Now that is too much really. But then again, there are some exceptions that I would make.

What am I really trying to say? We should know whats real and whats not. Thats all.

 

That is why, I am proud to say that I've been reading "Speeches that change the world" (well apart from my Bible of course). Some of the phrases in the speeches that has left me thinking:

Rainbow Rowell

So lately I've been downloading iBooks. A friend recommended Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell. I read it and two other books she wrote too. She is my new fave author - in a love / hate kind of way. I will tell you why.

1. Eleanor & Park
This particular novel got me a bit worked up I must say. The whole story unfolded pretty nicely for me. It is not the typical kind of love story. For once the girl is not super gorgeous/rich/smart/talented. In fact she was downright opposite. Chubby, red-curly hair, messed up family and probably faced problems many others can relate to. If you can handle a little bit of a suspense ending this is definitely a good read. I like Rainbow Rowell because she spares the details when necessary.


2. Fangirl
I could not put this book down. Finished it at one go. I must say... Rowell has a way of making her characters so darn attractive I fear any Hollywood actor would not stand a chance of those already imagined in the readers head. And oh man, what kind of name is Levi? If he is not so attractive already, Levi is such a gorgeous name. Literally swooning over him. The book as usual ended with a really good twist too. But I did find it weird, the fan fiction thing. The Simon and Baz. I didn't really get what was going on there so I skipped those parts - most of them. (I have to be completely honest, I didn't know it was a gay thing. I didn't get it anyways so it didn't matter.) Seriously, Rowell is extremely talented in making her characters so darn attractive. Not in terms of physical features but character wise too. Give me some time to lower my expectations of gentleman again okay, Rowell set it too high in these books. Darn. Good read.


3. Attachments
I am not sure about the release dates of these books but I just finished Attachments. Saved the best for last even. If anything I typed up there did not want to make you read the book already just stop reading and read this one. Seriously. The characters - Beth, Jennifer and Lincoln are somewhat real. Not exactly relatable to someone in a totally different age group but real. I am still somewhat awed at Rowell's talent to paint such wonderful characters. I love her books because it does not involve much of the mushy kissing stuff. Some authors get a bit overboard with that and you feel like you're reading something else altogether. Like I said, THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ. Not only is it a fun, light read - it is really amusing. The characters are not fairy tale-ish. Their actions reflect what we, hopefully as people would do. Of course for the exception of Lincoln - the heart throb. Okay, okay, snapping back to reality now.

But seriously. Please don't make movies out of these books yet. Let everyone read them. So now you know how I spend most of my time. More books to read, but that is all for today. :)

Sunday service was so good today. Finally went to YC after a long long time. So grateful to have Kristen with me too. Shopping after that was also very entertaining and my legs decided to be good. Knees all buckled up now but it's already night time so there is not much walking left to do.

The Fault in Our Stars

If you play this while reading reviews/thoughts of people on the book; get some tissues first. You will need it. I finished reading this short book in two nights. The only reason is because my heart couldn't take it. What a beautiful book. It is definitely one for instigating waterworks. If you know what I mean. I cannot say it is about love entirely. However it is a very thought provoking book. What an emotional read.

The love between Hazel and Augustus was so real. Frankly, I have never read something so intense (not including books abundant with those scenes), nothing like I have ever read before. But oh they way they thought in the book. Reflects the thoughts we ought to have. Because in the end we're all dying, cancer or no cancer. I shall leave you to ponder on whether or not you should read "The Fault in Our Stars", generally I don't agree to everything they say about the after life but I believe it opens minds. Thinking beyond living selfishly. With that, I have chosen beautiful pages of the book. So beautiful, I cannot...
